Why Diabetes Affects Foot Health
Diabetes affects the feet in two primary ways:
- Nerve Damage (Neuropathy): High blood sugar levels over time can damage the nerves in the feet, causing a condition called diabetic neuropathy. This can lead to numbness, tingling, and a reduced ability to feel pain. When you can’t feel pain in your feet, it becomes easier to overlook injuries or blisters, leading to infections that can escalate quickly.
- Poor Circulation: Diabetes can also affect blood flow, leading to poor circulation, particularly in the lower extremities. Reduced blood flow means that your feet have a harder time healing from cuts, blisters, or other injuries. This can make even a small injury become a serious health concern if left untreated.
