What Causes Heel Pain?
Heel pain can occur for a variety of reasons. The most common causes include:
- Plantar Fasciitis: This is one of the most frequent causes of heel pain, particularly in the morning. It occurs when the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs along the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed. This condition typically causes sharp pain in the heel, especially after long periods of rest.
- Heel Spurs: These are bony growths that form on the heel bone, often as a result of plantar fasciitis or other conditions. Heel spurs can cause persistent pain, particularly when walking or standing for long periods.
- Achilles Tendonitis: Inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, can lead to heel pain. This is common among athletes or those who engage in repetitive motion activities.
- Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa (a small fluid-filled sac that cushions the joint) in the heel can also lead to discomfort. This condition can develop from overuse or trauma.
- Overuse or Injury: Overuse, particularly in active individuals or athletes, can lead to stress on the heel and surrounding structures, causing pain. An injury from a fall or accident can also result in heel pain.
